“The most precious gift we can offer anyone is our attention. When mindfulness embraces those we love, they will bloom like flowers.”
― Thich Nhat Hanh
A note from (someone else)...
My niece gets mad at me for "never" answering my phone. And okay, to be fair, I often don't have my phone with me. And even when I do, I'll often let it go to voicemail. Especially if I'm with someone else. Because if I'm with someone else, I want to be fully present with and for that person.
My niece is never, ever, ever (I mean ever) without her cell phone (know anyone like that?). A shake or a beep and the little device is always, without fail, snapped into place, front and center. "Hey, we're in the middle of a conversation," I think. She gives a conciliatory nod to let me know she can totally multi-task. She's listening. Go ahead. But I've lost my train of thought.
I have never actually had a conversation with her about this. When I’m with her (or anyone else, for that matter), I let my phone ring-I don't answer it. I don't even look at it. Because I want to honor my time with her.
Well goody for me, right? Not so fast. This quote today has me thinking. Maybe I could do better. Maybe I should go easier on my techno-addicted loved ones.
Maybe their ultra-availability via mobile phone is their way of giving others attention; of being there for them when they call. I'll have to chew on that a bit more. And maybe I'll give her a call to let her know I'm thinking about her...
What do you think? Do you think technology is bringing us closer together these days or just creating more distance?
With a hug and a smile,
